EFL Cup Final 2018 Winner Tip: Arsenal are the value!

Are we tipping Manchester City or Arsenal as our EFL Cup Final 2018 Winner Tip? The Final of this competition (currently known as the Carabao Cup) will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 25th February 2018. 92 clubs were eligible for this competition (all clubs in the Premier League to League Two), but just 2 remain. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City overcame Bristol City, whilst Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal overcame Chelsea, in the 2 legged Semi-Finals. Last season Manchester United won their 5th trophy in this competition, by beating Southampton. However, the defending champions were knocked out by Bristol City in their Quarter-Final this season.

  • Manchester City have won the EFL Cup/League Cup four times (1970, 1976, 2014, and 2016), and they also lost the Final once (1974). Pep Guardiola should be especially hungry for this trophy, in his second season at Manchester City. Unlike at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, in his 1st season at Manchester City he failed to win a major trophy for his new club – which would have been a major disappointment for a manager of his calibre (who is considered the best in the world by some). Victory in the Final of the League Cup would be his first ever major trophy for an English club. Guardiola’s Manchester City are still on course for an unprecedented quadruple of the Premier League (where they have a big lead), Champions League (where they are in the Round of 16), FA Cup (where they are in the 4th Round), and this competition (where they are in the Final). No English club has ever achieved this particular quadruple in a single season.

  • Arsenal have won the EFL Cup/League Cup twice (1987, and 1993), but they have also lost the Final five times (1968, 1969, 1988, 2007, and 2011). Arsene Wenger will also be hungry for this trophy – they are way off the pace in the Premier League, and may well not even finish in the top 4 this season. They are also out of this season’s FA Cup. This means the Europa League and this competition, are their only 2 hopes of major silverware this season. At some point in the near future Arsene Wenger will likely want to bring his tenure at Arsenal to an end. What better way than with a trophy? Wenger has never won the Champions League/Europa League for Arsenal. Of the 3 major domestic trophies an English team can currently win, Wenger won no trophies between the 2005-06 season and 2012-13 season (although before that period he won 3 Premier Leagues, and 4 FA Cups for Arsenal). In recent years, however, he has added 3 FA Cups (2014, 2015, and 2017) to his previous haul. Having lost Alexis Sanchez in the January 2018 transfer window, Arsene Wenger will be keen to show his team can cope without their world class former player.

Both sides have really good reasons to really want to win this competition, even though it is usually considered the least important of the major domestic trophies. We expect both managers to put out close to their strongest available team. At the time of writing Arsenal are priced at 15/8 at Sun Bets (odds checked on 25th January 2018, but please note odds may change at any time). This is value we cannot ignore, and as such is our EFL Cup Final 2018 Winner Tip. Although undoubtably Manchester City are stronger than Arsenal in terms of first team and overall squad, in an one-off big match Arsenal have shown they can rise to the occasion – as demonstrated when they beat the then recently crowned new Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup Final last season. This price is remarkable value in our opinion, and we certainly recommend you back our EFL Cup Final 2018 Winner Tip.
