Eurovision Song Contest 2018 Winner Tip

Which country is our Eurovision Song Contest 2018 Winner Tip? 2018 sees the 63rd running of this famous contest. Portugal won for the 1st time in 2017 (and as winners they are hosting the contest at the Altice Arena in Lisbon), when Salvador Sobral scored the most points with Amor pelos dois (Loving for the both of us). Two Semi-Finals (Tuesday 8 & Thursday 10 May 2018), are followed by the Final on Saturday 12 May 2018.

43 countries will be singing (37 will be competing in one of 2 semi-finals, for 20 Final Spots), whilst the biggest 5 contributors to the EBU (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom) and the hosts Portugal get automatic entry to the Final. That means there will be 26 countries singing in the final.

Before, we get onto our Eurovision Song Contest 2018 Winner Tip, here’s 2 countries that we don’t think have any chance whatsoever of winning, so please don’t be tempted to place a bet on them:

  • United Kingdom (33/1*) – Will be represented by SuRie in 2018, singing Storm. Guaranteed a place in the 2018 Final (without the need to qualify via the Semi-Finals), and historically one of the most successful countries that have competed (5 wins, the last of which was in 1997 with Love, Shine a Light by Katrina and the Waves). However, in the last 15 contests the UK has finished outside the top 10, 14 times – that includes 3 last place finishes, one of which was with an infamous ‘nul’ points.
  • Ireland (40/1*) – Ryan O’Shaughnessy will sing ‘Together’ – reached Final of Britain’s Got Talent in 2012 (5th). Although a record 7 time winner, their last win was a long time ago (1996 – which was their 4th win in 5 consecutive years). More worryingly, Ireland have failed to qualify from the Semi-Finals into the Final in each of the last 4 contests, and the year before that they finished in last place.

We did consider tipping Finland – Saara Aalto, runner up in the UK’s The X Factor in 2016, will represent Finland. However, we think their price (10/1*) offers little value.

In contrast the 14/1 on offer at Sun Bets for Australia, represents fantastic value for a country that has only been in the competition 3 times before (2015 – 2017), with super results each time. For those that are unfamiliar with the Eurovision, that’s not a typo – we really mean Australia (not Austria)! 2018 will be their 4th consecutive appearance. Originally, they appeared as an one-off to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the contest in 2015. However, they have wanted and been allowed to compete after that too. Since 2016 they have had to qualify through the semi-finals, which they will have to do again in 2018.

Their results so far are:
2015 – Guy Sebastian (Tonight Again) came 5th in the Final, Automatic entry to the Final
2016 – Dami Im (Sound of Silence) came 1st in their semi-final, 2nd in the Final
2017 – Isaiah (Don’t Come Easy) came 6th in their semi-final, 9th in the Final

In 2018, Australia are pulling out all the stops, by entering internationally recognised singer Jessica Mauboy. The Australian R&B singer-songwriter, and actress (most well known for her role in The Sapphires), has already performed as a guest at one of the 2014 Semi-Finals. We think Australia have a realistic chance of winning with a singer that may well be known to voters, outside the country she represents. The price itself is great value. Realistic chance of winning + great value odds = our Eurovision Song Contest 2018 Winner Tip!

* Odds checked on 12th February 2018, but may change at any time.

THIS EVENT HAS FINISHED – IT’S TOO LATE TO PLACE A BET!!! Our tip didn’t win – Israel won the contest.
