As college basketball’s 2024-25 regular season comes to an end, one of the sport’s most iconic rivalries will be in the spotlight.
On Saturday night, Duke will travel to take on North Carolina in Chapel Hill, another chapter in the historic series of head-to-head meetings between the two programs. And in the season-concluding matchup, both teams will have significant stakes on the line.
For the Blue Devils, 27-3 overall and 18-1 in ACC action, they’ll be seeking to lock down their first outright conference regular-season title since 2022. As things stand entering the weekend, Duke leads the ACC standings, but with just a one-game advantage over Clemson and Louisville. Behind Wooden Award candidate and versatile star Cooper Flagg, the Blue Devils could secure the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament with a rivalry win Saturday.
The Tar Heels, meanwhile, are still fighting for an NCAA Tournament spot. At 20-11 overall and 13-6 in conference play, North Carolina is currently a bubble team without many impressive wins this season. A victory over Duke could do a whole lot for its at-large tournament bid chances, as the Blue Devils come into Saturday’s game as the second-ranked team in the country.
Jon Scheyer’s squad, led by Flagg, could complete a season sweep of the Tar Heels on Saturday. Hubert Davis’ unit, though, could extend a six-game winning streak in a big way, potentially playing its way into March by coming out on top. With conference tournaments looming, Duke vs. UNC will be one of the most consequential matchups of the weekend.
