Man United icon tells Bruno Fernandes to cut out 'bad habit' as Red Devils captain image

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes remains a divisive figure amongst opposition fans.

The Portugal international has not avoided criticism this season as Ruben Amorim’s side have continued to struggle in Premier League action. The Red Devils hopes of a trophy now rest solely with the UEFA Europa League as do their hopes of European qualification for next season.

Despite coming in for some negativity over his performance levels and leadership style, Fernandes has consistently stepped up when needed in 2025, with 16 goals scored across all competitions in 2024/25.

Heading into the international break that included six goals in his last five United games including a hat trick in their 3-0 win over Real Sociedad.

However, his tendency to harass referees and exaggerate injuries remains a sticking point for some United fans, led by former captain Roy Keane.

Keane has regularly questioned Fernandes’ credentials to lead United through a difficult period but the player himself – and Amorim – have both rejected the Irishman’s stance as ‘just his opinion’.

Another ex-United captain has now weighed into the debate, with Bryan Robson praising Fernandes’ consistency in a tough spell, but he admitted certain aspects of his game need to change.

“Bruno has been in fantastic form in the last two months,” Robson told an interview with BetSelect, reported via the Daily Mirror.

“I think the manager has told him ‘you’ve got to be a leader on the pitch’. There’s no extra pressure on you as captain. You’re proud to be captain of a team like Manchester United.

“You love the responsibility. As the captain, the inconsistency of the team is not your problem. That’s the manager’s problem.

“I would say that I just hope Bruno stays away from the rolling over when he gets tackled and that sort of thing. Bruno is so confident at the moment, and he’s making a massive difference to the team. He’s has done exactly what I’d expect of a United captain.”

Fernandes expected back in Manchester in the coming days. following Portugal’s 5-3 UEFA Nations League aggregate win over Denmark with United next in action at in-form Nottingham Forest on April 1.
