Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has not exactly gone smoothly.

New coach Eric Chelle got a debut victory over Rwanda in the March international break, but the Super Eagles found the going more difficult against a diligent Zimbabwe defence. Even after Victor Osimhen finally broke the deadlock, they conceded a 90th-minute equaliser that could well prove a decisive blow in their hopes of claiming top spot in the group.

South Africa have been able to take control of Group C of the CAF qualifying section and are on the brink of securing the sole automatic spot at next year’s finals. They are five points clear at the top of the standings with only four matchdays remaining.

It all means Bafana Bafana’s game against Nigeria later this year could be critically important.

When is Nigeria game vs. South Africa?

Nigeria are due to play South Africa in September 2025, although an exact date and time of the fixture is yet to be confirmed.

The game will be on matchday eight of the CAF qualifying section, after their home meeting with Rwanda and before their campaign concludes in October against Lesotho and Benin.

Nigeria’s next game is a friendly against Russia in June. Their next competitive match will not be until the September World Cup qualifying window.

Their group-stage campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations provisionally begins on December 23.
