Who won the Chinese Grand Prix? F1 results and standings image

Update: Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly have all been disqualified following post-race scrutineering checks. Leclerc and Gasly’s disqualifications were due to car weight breaches, while Hamilton’s was due to his rear skid block being below the minimum thickness required after the race.

Formula 1 headed to China for the second round of the 2025 season, fresh off an action-packed Australian race.

The opening race saw six retirements amidst the wet conditions and, with the weather being dry in China, drivers were able to use more of the grip at the resurfaced Shanghai circuit.

McLaren entered the race having had a 1-2 in Australia and a 2-8 in the Sprint race, making them the top constructor, while standings-topping Lando Norris started from third on the grid.

Who won the Chinese Grand Prix?

Oscar Piastri started his first F1 race from pole position in China, maintained the lead into the first corner, and eventually took the win, with team-mate Lando Norris managing to jump second-placed George Russell through the first corner.

Further back Max Verstappen had an uncharacteristically poor start, losing a place to both of the Ferraris and struggling to make an impact after falling to sixth.

There was worse news for Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso though as his brakes caught fire on lap three, forcing a fourth-lap retirement.

The first pit stops showed that the undercut was more powerful – this was especially true for Russell, who pitted earlier than Lando Norris and retook his second place. A short battle ensued between the two Britons, with Norris making a daring move on the inside of the first corner to resume his second-placed running.

Despite damage for Charles Leclerc’s front wing on the first lap, Ferrari decided to swap their drivers – the Monegasque showing more pace than Hamilton in front despite having a missing front wing end plate.

Things settled down after the first round of pit stops though, as drivers settled into steady gaps and managed tires, however there was some late drama.

Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda suffered a front wing in the wake of Carlos Sainz, having to pit for a new front wing and dropping to last, while Isack Hadjar was forced off track by Jack Doohan – the Australian picking up a 10s penalty as a result.

Lando Norris was also dealing with an ailing car, with the brake pedal getting increasingly long – when a driver needs to press the brake pedal deeper to get the same pressure – but was still able to finish second, while Leclerc’s broken front wing finally cost him a position in the dying laps as Verstappen made it past to retake fourth.

Who was driver of the day?

Kimi Antonelli was voted driver of the day, despite a fairly quiet race and a slightly anonymous eighth place.
